Classic Beauty

The "Patent 72" derailleur on our 1972 Cinelli. Not even Campagnolo makes them like this any more. 37 years old (with a set of new pulleys) and still going strong.

  1. I just got a Patent 73 derailleur in the mail...and it looks like it's got years and years left on it.

One question -- at the base of the return spring enclosure (lower body of the derailleur), there's a threaded steel stud with a screwdriver slot cut into the domed head. Is this an "overtravel" stop? If not, what is the purpose of this stud?

  2. Yes--that screw keeps the jockey pulley mechanism from moving too far in a clockwise direction (taking slack out of the chain).
