Ride with the CampyOnlyGuy

We'll be riding our Campy-equipped randonneuring bike tomorrow (March 20) in the 300-kilometer brevet hosted by the Davis Bike Club. If you're there, say hello!

More info on the ride is here.

  1. Hi CampyOnlyGuy.

I've just started following your blog, so maybe I missed it. I would love to see a description of the bike you are riding. I'm in the process of restoring a vintage bike for randonneuring and the biggest issue I am having is the gearing. Most campy gears are for racing so the rear cogs are small and the derailleurs are short cage. I need a large rear cog for climbing. How are you gearing your bike?

    Thanks

    Bruce

  2. My randonneuring bike is a 1997 Rivendell Road. Mostly Chorus/Centaur equipment. I have it set up with a 50/34 compact UltraTorque crankset and a 13-29 9-speed cluster. That gives me a good range of gears and a fairly low bailout (30x29). This might not work if you're looking for a vintage look--you may want to track down a Nuovo Record triple crank and a Rally rear derailleur.

  3. Thanks for the response. I have the Nuovo Record triple 52-42-30, and I want to keep it as a freewheel so I don't have to spread the chainstays. I'm going to try a 5 speed 14-30 cog set. I will keep looking for a rally RD. Glad you had a great brevet
