Pantographing

It was common in the 80s and 90s for bicycle manufacturers (mostly Italian) to offer Campagnolo gruppos that had been engraved (and in some cases lightened) to match their bikes. In this example, a Super Record crank set has been engraved with 'Colnago' and lightened. Note that the spider arms have been cut out in the middle, and the crank arm, particularly near the spindle, has been thinned. According to reader John, who sent this photo, this gruppo was also chrome plated.


So-called 'pantographed' gruppos are not particularly collectible, but they look good when they are on a matching bike.
