Mexinelli

This bike from Rob brings back memories. Back in the late 70s, the CampyOnlyGuy owned a beautiful red Windsor much like this one (but equipped with SunTour components). That was a nice bike, one that we enjoyed riding until we caught the car bug a few years later.

Windsor was one of a number of frame builders who started working in Mexico at the time (Benotto was another). Many of them produced frames that were blatant copies of the Cinelli Speciale Corsa--hence the 'Mexinelli' nickname. To this day, anyone buying what appears to be a Cinelli is well advised to make sure it didn't come from a workshop in Mexico.

This particular version is mostly Nuovo Record. The bar-ends are period-correct SunTours, and the seat post is Chorus. Rob's getting it roadworthy and ready to sell. Contact him if you're interested: Electrojet97_at_comcast_dot_net

Another 600K Report

Very detailed writeup of the 600K brevet last weekend here. The writer says the route has 27,000 feet of climbing--that seems high to me, perhaps because it was generated by a GPS unit (GPS typically overstates clmbing by adding up even microscopic uphills).

Tim's Trek

Reader Tim sent this photo of his classic Trek, repainted by Joe Bell (a Campy Only sponsor) to look like the original. Note the somewhat unusual Victory gruppo.

Also shown below is the original Cateye computer--your CampyOnlyGuy had one of these back in the 80s as well. Primitive by today's standards, it was state of the art at the time.

Campy-Equipped Brevet

We took our Campy-equipped randonneuring bike out for a spin this weekend: 600 kilometers from the Golden Gate Bridge to Fort Bragg and back. More photos here.

Tomorrow: 600K Brevet

Tomorrow, your CampyOnlyGuy will depart from the Golden Gate Bridge at 6 a.m. and head for Fort Bragg, 180 miles north. We'll ride to Fort Bragg and then head back to the Golden Gate. This is the San Francisco Randonneurs' 600-kilometer brevet, which we're riding to get a better shot at an entry in next year's Paris-Brest-Paris. Look for us on our Campy-equipped Rivendell. We'll try to blog for the ride ... and watch for photos on Monday.

Sarah writes, "Wish I could show pics of the bb cutouts. Campagnolo dropouts. All Campagnolo components. Bars/stem are cinelli. Saddle is a B15. Bag is carradice cape roll. Hubset is Campagnolo gran sport laced to Galli Italia rims using Berg NOS spokes from the 70s." Nice.

Riders from all over the California and the U.S. were arriving in Davis today to check in for tomorrow's Davis Double (a 200-mile ride from Davis to Clear Lake and back). Watch for blog posts tomorrow, and more photos!

Pantographing

It was common in the 80s and 90s for bicycle manufacturers (mostly Italian) to offer Campagnolo gruppos that had been engraved (and in some cases lightened) to match their bikes. In this example, a Super Record crank set has been engraved with 'Colnago' and lightened. Note that the spider arms have been cut out in the middle, and the crank arm, particularly near the spindle, has been thinned. According to reader John, who sent this photo, this gruppo was also chrome plated.


So-called 'pantographed' gruppos are not particularly collectible, but they look good when they are on a matching bike.

Rapha: New Campy-Equipped London Boutique

English cyclingwear maker Rapha has opened a new boutique in London that's much that a store ... it's a place to live the cycling lifestyle. More info (and a few photos featuring Campy-equipped bikes) here. The CampyOnlyGuy has one Rapha jersey (wool short-sleeve) and a matching set of arm warmers. Nice stuff, but like Campy's clothing a little too expensive to fill our closet with.

Coming Soon: CampyOnlyGuy's 27th Davis Double

It was way back in 1983 that I first rode the Davis Double. That was the first double century (200-mile) ride I ever did, and it was an epic ride through Yolo, Napa, and Lake counties in Northern California on a blazing hot day. I still remember taking salt tablets in Arbuckle, and the feeling of accomplishment when I crossed the finish line some 15 hours later.

I missed the DC in 1984, but I've done every other ride since then, for a total of 26 DCs. My consecutive streak sits at 25 (1984-2009). Five of those were on fixed gears!

And I'll be back next weekend for my 27th trip around the course. Look for me on my Campy-equipped Richard Sachs, and say hi.

How To: Adding Bag Loops for Your Retro Ride

Those of us who ride "retro" bikes know that some models of Brooks (and other) saddles don't have the loops that are used to mount a saddle bag. Here's a quick way to add those loops, with the added benefit of making the bag easily removable:
