Buying Campagnolo in the Downturn: A Campy Only Survey

It's been about a week, so here are the results of our survey of potential Campy purchasers. We asked if your economic situation was going to encourage you to buy more Campy products than last year, the same amount, or less. Here's what you said (click on the image to see a graph of the results):

• 27% of respondents said they would buy MORE
• 48% said they would buy the SAME amount
• 24% said they would buy LESS

That makes a total of 75% would would buy as much as or more equipment than last year. Seems some things--Campy included--are immune to hard times.

Circa '84 Ciöcc Mockba '80: restored by Assenmacher about 10 years ago and re-built with a selection of classic old-school Campy bits: Super-Record cranks & shifting mechs, Cobalto brakes & aero levers. included some interesting old-school selections for my personal taste: early aero Wolber TX-Profile rims, Mavic retro-friction shifters, and SunTour XC-Pro seatpin.

Interesting back-story: this was my first real, honest-to-goodness racing bike i owned while in college. well, the same season I got it built up to perfection in the late 80s, it was stolen from my apartment! Fast forward several years I was fortunate enough to recover the frame and fork which allowed me to bring it back to life and re-live a little of my youth!

Tomorrow's Campy Only Ride: Knoxville DC

No, not Knoxville in Tennessee -- this ride is in Northern California. 200+ miles with about 14,000 feet of climbing. We'll be on our Campy-equipped Rivendell Road, so look for us on the road between Vacaville and Clearlake. Photos and videos will be posted after the ride.

Thursday's Bike: Bryan's Atala Special

Bryan originally bought this bike on layaway, finally working at the shop that he visited every week to bring in another $10 or $20. He recently reassembled it, with the results shown here.

Look close and you'll see some unusual bits, including a Nuovo Gran Sport rear derailleur.

Wednesday's Bike: Jeff's 70s Cinelli

Jeff is hoping for a pair of period-correct Record calipers to replace the Modolo brakes on his 1970s Cinelli, but it's an otherwise Campy Only restoration. Nice job.
